Anyone can get car sick, even children. When you’re in an automobile, your eyes see the interior of the automobile as motionless. At the same time, the vestibular system of your inner ears sense that there is motion occurring outside of the vehicle. Motion Sickness occurs when you get conflicting input from your senses and is the reason why you can feel dizzy or nauseated while traveling.
Here are 10 ways in which you can avoid car sickness, without the side effects of medication:
- If you have an option, try sitting in the front seat or driving. Being able to focus on the road ahead of you tends to prevent sickness.
- If you’re on a road trip or traveling a far distance, take frequent breaks to step outside of the car and walk around.
- Try taking in the fresh air by opening the window.
- Try keeping the temperature slightly cooler than normal. Warm temperatures can make you feel more nauseated.
- Avoid a big meal, especially greasy or spicy food before trips. If you eat before a trip, try eating a few hours before. If you need a snack during a long trip, crackers and cold soda can help calm your tummy. Ginger pills and other ginger products like Ginger Ale are known to be especially helpful.
- Sometimes turning on the music or starting a conversation can help distract you from becoming queasy.
- Avoid reading, drawing, or performing anything that causes you to have to focus on something in the car rather than the movement outside the car and where you are going.
- Close your eyes or try taking a nap…..if you’re not driving, of course.
- Try taking long deep breaths. Focus on your breathing.
