Top Memorial Day Vacation DestinationsMay 18, 2016
In many areas, Memorial Day has become recognized as the beginning of summer—people don shorts, fire up the barbecue and bask in the warm weather before it gets too hot.
Memorial Day is also the perfect time to plan a getaway before the routine of the season sets in. Here are a few recommended Memorial Day destinations.
Palm Springs, California: This oasis in the middle of Southern California’s desert has long been a destination for Hollywood celebrities, and it’s easy to see why. The easy-going resort town atmosphere makes it an ideal place to kick back and relax. For golfers, there are few courses as scenic than the greens in Palm Springs—it’s easy to see why they attract pros from all over the world.
Palm Springs is also one of the best Memorial Day destinations due to its proximity to Joshua Tree National Park. Popular with both campers and hikers, Joshua Tree’s one-of-a-kind landscape is a mecca for outdoors-enthusiasts. Seriously, after a visit to this park, it’s easy to see why it was such an inspiration for Dr. Seuss’ imagination.
Las Vegas, Nevada: The City of Sin is always a good time for anyone looking for a little debauchery. Nearly everything is legal in Vegas, which is why the phrase “whatever happens in Vegas stays in Vegas,” became commonplace. But the city is not excusive to adults looking for trouble—there are enough pools, arcades, amusement rides and great dining for the whole family.
Las Vegas is one of the more popular Memorial Day destinations, so if you plan on going there, make sure to make reservations early.
Moab, Utah: Southern Utah has some of the most breath-taking scenery in all the United States. The red rock formations are out of this world, literally: the scenery closely resembles Mars, and has even been used as a stand-in for intergalactic movies like Galaxy Quest.
Moab, Utah is located right next to Arches National Park, where visitors can hike and bike over stunning red rock, as well as view the world famous Delicate Arch and Balanced Rock. Moab itself is a funky town with a lot of character, good beer and food. Plus, Memorial Day is about the last opportunity to enjoy Moab before the Southern Utah desert becomes unbearably hot.
New York City, New York: New York City is one of the best Memorial Day destinations because it’s the time of year when the city sheds its rain- and snow-drenched skin and lives up to its name as the city that never sleeps.
There is so much to do in New York—everything from sightseeing, taking advantage of the 4 a.m. last calls, or adventuring to unknown destinations via a subway system that runs all night. Also, don’t forget to check out the Coney Island, the city’s seaside boardwalk/carnival. The historic amusement park is home to roller coasters, buskers and even a freak show. There’s also a number of Memorial Day activities happening on Coney Island every year, which makes this end of the line destination well worth it.
Be Prepared for Anything
Regardless of where you beginning of summer travels take you, it’s important that you’re feeling your best. Whether you’re riding the roller coasters at Coney Island, or driving through the mountains of Utah, don’t let motion sickness get you down. Be sure to pack a bottle of Motioneaze for all of your Memorial Day travels.
